Almaden Swim and Racquet Club History

    By Gerald Macedo

The Almaden Swim and Racquet Club was opened April 15, 1970.  It was built by the Del Webb Corporation to provide swim, tennis and social opportunities for people who had purchased homes in the Del Webb Country Club area but were not interested in a golf club.  The Del Webb Corporation operated ASRC until enough family memberships were sold that the club could operate on its own.  Barney Gillis was the project manager and a Board of Directors was selected to help with the promotion of the sale of the club to the membership.  The transfer of ownership from Del Webb to the ASRC membership took place in the fall of 1971 with approximately 175 family memberships purchased.  The original plan was to sell 300 family memberships which is the number of families in the club today.
